Announcement after a long wait

After several months of uncertainty, director Bharat Shrinate has confirmed that “Udaipur Files” will release in cinemas on August 8, 2025.

The announcement comes soon after the Supreme Court’s direction asking the Delhi High Court to hear challenges against the film’s release.

Story based on true tragedy

The film is based on the shocking murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, Rajasthan, in 2022.

Veteran actor Vijay Raaz plays the dead tailor in this Amit Jani production, which has sparked debate across the country.

Censorship hurdles

“They tore our film into pieces,” Shrinate had previously told NDTV, revealing that the Central Board of Film Certification had demanded 150 cuts.

These censorship battles caused the filmmakers to miss their original July 11 release date.

Legal rollercoaster

The Supreme Court bench headed by Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi deemed the filmmakers’ appeal against the Delhi High Court’s stay order as “infructuous”, as they had already accepted the Centre’s July 21 approval, which came with six required cuts and disclaimer amendments.

Director remains adamant

“We respect the Supreme Court’s order and are ready for August 8,” Shrinate told reporters.

“Jani Firefox Films will soon begin promotions for a worldwide release. Truth always wins.”

Why so much controversy?

A recent petition in the Delhi High Court had sought to halt the film’s release, arguing that it could potentially incite communal tension and disrupt public order across India.

The film shows the horrific incident of June 2022 where Kanhaiya Lal was hacked to death with a cleaver by two men in his shop, allegedly for supporting a social media post against Islam.

With all eyes now set on its August 8 release, audiences will finally get to see the controversial film that has endured censorship battles, court cases and multiple postponements to tell its story.
