Restoration Gives Film New Breath

Muzaffar Ali’s 1981 masterpiece, Rekha, is now ready to shine again in 4K. The restoration by NFDC and the National Film Archive of India has brought back the film’s color, sound, and delicate canvas to a new level.

This will be the first time this restored version will be screened outside India, at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, and it will surely revive this old love for new audiences.

Treasures Section and the Highlights of the Film Festival

The festival’s Treasures section showcases restored classics from around the world, and Umrao Jaan will be screened alongside Spellbound, The Big Blue, and silent comedies like Chaplin and Keaton.

Accompanied by live music by Neil Brand, these shows will recreate the spirit of old-school cinema.

The Red Sea Festival runs from December 4th to 13th, 2025, and its roster boasts a slew of big names—so Umrao Jaan’s presence here will be a cultural storm of sorts.

Rekha didn’t just act in Umrao Jaan; she lived the character; her journey from Amiran to Umrao is intertwined with her voice, delicacy, and inner anguish.
