Sweta Keswani, a well-known face in the TV world, has made a comment about Hollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas that has sparked a lot of discussion.
The “Baa, Bahu Aur Baby” actress acknowledged Priyanka’s journey from Bollywood to Hollywood as remarkable, but also said that Priyanka hasn’t done much to promote other South Asians in the American film industry.
“Mindy Kaling is better, not Priyanka”
Shweta said that Priyanka’s achievements are commendable, but her journey has been “limited to herself.”
Praising American-Indian writer and producer Mindy Kaling, she said, “Priyanka is not Mindy Kaling. She’s not helping other South Asians.
To be honest, she’s only helping herself. She only thinks about herself.”
“Mindy is creating opportunities”
Comparing the two actresses, Shweta said that Mindy Kaling’s work is different because she actively creates opportunities for others.
She said, “What Mindy Kaling is doing is amazing because she’s writing, producing, and helping other South Asians advance in this business, which is already incredibly difficult for Asian women.”
There are groups within the South Asian community too
Speaking about her Hollywood experiences, Shweta said that there’s a kind of exclusivity within the South Asian community. She admitted, “I think there are groups everywhere.
Some people like certain people, some people call out certain people, and they form their own groups. Unfortunately, I’m not part of any South Asian groups.”
