Veteran singer Kumar Sanu, who wowed audiences with his melodious voice in the 90s, is currently in the news for a different reason.
He has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking legal protection for his voice, name, and style.
This case shows that in this era of AI and online misuse, artists are now forced to approach the court to protect their identities.
My name, my voice, my will
Sanu Da has directly requested the court that no one should be able to use his voice, name, photographs, and his unique style of singing for commercial purposes without permission.
The petition, filed through lawyers, states that his identity and artistic talents are being misused.
This isn’t just exploitation for money; it’s also tarnishing his reputation.
Sanu Da has also alleged a violation of his moral rights under the Copyright Act, which protects an artist’s integrity and authorship.
AI’s ‘Fake’ Voice and Pranks
The petition’s primary focus is on AI voice cloning and digital abuse.
Numerous GIFs, videos, and AI-generated audio using Kumar Sanu’s voice and appearance are circulating online.
Sanu Da says some of these portray him indecently or humorously.
When this fake content is circulated on Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube, the creators earn millions, while the artist receives nothing.
This is considered a false endorsement.
What are ‘Personality Rights’?
Personality or Publicity Rights mean that any person has the right to control the commercial use of their identity (name, voice, appearance).
This protects in two ways
- Publicity Right: No one takes illegal advantage of your identity.
- Privacy Right: You are protected from deepfakes or morphed images.
Sanu Da is not alone. Recently, big names like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Suniel Shetty, and Asha Bhosle have also received interim relief in court to protect their identities from digital theft.
It is clear that now every artist will have to fight this legal battle to protect their voice.
