A mother’s acceptance
Speaking about her daughter-in-law on Koffee With Karan, Jaya Bachchan was candid, “She is lovely.
I love her and always have,” she said about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Behind every great family
What impresses Jaya the most? Aishwarya’s humility. Despite being a big star herself, Jaya noticed that Aishwarya “quietly stands at the back” at family gatherings.
“She is understanding of everything,” Jaya said, appreciating that Aishwarya never hogs the limelight.
Fitting into the family
“She fit into the family perfectly,” Jaya said. The veteran actress appreciated how quickly Aishwarya understood the family dynamics and recognised old friends.
When asked if Aishwarya is the perfect wife to Abhishek Bachchan, Jaya said without hesitation: “Yes, I think so.”
The Bengali connection
Abhishek once jokingly complained that he was outnumbered at home.
“Mom and Aish keep talking in Bengali, aligning against me,” he laughed in a 2015 interview.
Jaya speaks Bengali naturally, while Aishwarya learnt it while working on “Chokher Bali” with filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh.

A warm welcome
A few months before the couple’s April 2007 wedding, Jaya publicly welcomed Aishwarya at the Filmfare Awards.
While accepting her Lifetime Achievement Award, she said, “I am going to be the mother-in-law of a wonderful, lovely girl with great values, dignity and a lovely smile.”
Cameras caught Aishwarya wiping away tears.
Family life
Married since 2007, Abhishek and Aishwarya welcomed their daughter Aaradhya in November 2011, completing their family.
The Bachchan family bond
What makes their relationship work? Perhaps it is the mutual respect that Jaya highlighted years ago – where star power takes a backseat to family values and quiet understanding.
