First step in the world of music

Born on October 27, 1954 in Karwar, Karnataka, Anuradha Paudwal never took formal training in classical music!

She simply honed her talent by imitating the voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

Anuradha, who started playback singing with the 1973 film ‘Abhimaan’, got her first big success in 1983, when the song “Tu Mera Dilbar Hai” from ‘Hero’ became a superhit.

“I had no shortage of songs in the 80s and 90s,” Anuradha recalls.

Songs like “Mujhe Tumse Hai Itna Gile,” “Jaane Jigar Jaane Man,” and “Dhadak Dhadak Karne Laga” made her one of the top singers of Bollywood.

When life took a turn

Her career flourished even more after she married music arranger Arun Paudwal in 1969.

Arun recognized her voice and gave her many opportunities.

But Arun’s sudden death in an accident in 1991 left Anuradha shattered.

“When you lose your spouse, something breaks,” she says.

Around the same time, rumours started flying in Bollywood that her songs were being re-recorded by other singers.

Slowly, she started distancing herself from the film world.

A new journey of devotion

In the mid-90s, Gulshan Kumar of T-Series offered her to sing only bhajans.

“This was the turning point of my life,” Anuradha says.

The bhajans sung in her voice became so popular that people started calling her ‘bhajan samrajni’.

Lost of son – another big shock

In 2020, when her only son died of kidney failure at the age of 35, it was another big shock for her.

“First husband, then son… it felt like life was giving me test after test,” she painfully recalls.

Found peace in bhajans

On the “Be You With Shraddha S” podcast, Anuradha revealed that after these tragedies, she found mental peace in bhajans.

“I believe that everyone has to fulfill their karma,” she says.

“Singing bhajans is my karma, and it helped me overcome grief.”

Today Anuradha Paudwal is an invaluable asset of Indian music, who has touched the hearts of millions by transforming her pain into devotion.

Summary:

Anuradha Paudwal found success in Bollywood without musical training, but took refuge in bhajans after the death of her husband and son. She believes that it was devotional music that gave her the true meaning of life.
